The house built on beautiful but challenging site, which has irregular shape that drops vertically from the street edge and offer views to the harbors. As a response to the neighboring context, the street elevation adopts a modest, organic form and utilizes materials such as sandstone and timber in an undulating pattern. The low profile of this street elevation allows for views over the building from the public domain.

The house features three bedrooms with the living area at the lowest level to best utilize the outdoor garden space. The access to dwelling was on the third story (at street level) with arrival sense and unusual entry sequence. A four story void scallops out the building to unify all the levels and provides the sense of arrival at the top level. The void is expressed on the exterior of the building as a tapering blade that grows through the otherwise rectilinear building form. The void also collects light from the north and drops it to the lowest levels of the house.

The same site constraints also restrict the through flow of air. The void space is designed to provide a stack effect to naturally ventilate all levels of the house. To ensure thermal comfort, low E glass is used throughout and the eastern glass is protected by external blinds. Rain water is collected and used for landscaping and toilets. Solar panels and gas boosters are installed to provide for pool heating, hot water and hydronic trench heating which is designed as the primary method of heating for the dwelling.

This house captures dying qualities while screening the occupants from the emerging suburban houses and protecting them from the strong winds and storms. A deck is created on each of the cardinal points allowing the occupants to live externally any time of the year.

Our reference point for the design was found in a sketch by the great Danish architect Jorn Utzon, an image of people congregating on the beach under the dense, stormy Copenhagen sky. Uzton translated this in to the section of a church creating a mystical interior; we translated this in to the section of a holiday house that intensifies the experience of the ocean.

The section undulates in relationship to the plan form; each space includes an undulation that is eventually revealed at the beach side as a series of undulations connecting the living, dining and kitchen spaces to the dynamic ocean environment. The section extrudes from the beach end to the street side, those spaces that do not contain a direct view to the ocean maintain the memory of the ocean view through the continuing section.

External cladding is a strictly controlled ribbon of uncut compressed fibre cement sheeting and rough sawn plywood panels, the plywood inhabit the deck spaces and the CFC provides a durable exterior to storm exposed areas. While the exterior is tactile and articulated the interior is smooth and sculptured with subtle variations of white paint colour and gloss levels differentiating interior elements and reflecting the exterior.

A continuous band of high performance glass articulates the wall cladding from the roof, the roof overhang is carefully sized to exclude summer sun and admit low-level winter sun. The stretched western overhang excludes the low level sun allowing the occupants to engage in comfort with the setting sun.

The house appears to gently hover above the ground, a recessed concrete platform creates this illusion, the platform connects this house to the remaining holiday houses and the Dawesville Cut bridge, this is first platform that one passes and signifies the beginning of the holiday experience.

Constructed almost entirely of plantation pine timber, prefabricated and transported to Florida, the raw structure appeared like the carcass of a great whale. The use of steel is minimised to a few select areas where thin columns support the dense undulating roof creating tension in the context of the ocean view.

The hovering platform is finished with recycled Jarrah and continues between the interiors and exterior as one large plane, the holiday experience unfolds on this platform. Finished internally with Whittle Wax and externally with Sikkens oil, this platform will slowly reveal the marks of the beach and holiday lifestyle.

A native landscape garden surrounds this platform, carefully screening the surrounding suburban houses and providing an additional filter to the Western sun and Indian Ocean. The sound of the sea breeze transforms into an eerie whistle as it passes through the Casuarinas (Weeping Beach Sheoaks) reinforcing the complex, intense and delightful relationship to this environment creating a very West Australian experience.

The law allowed for small infill dwellings to be added onto existing single family properties throughout the city. It’s built on a standard 33?x122? lot and has the same footprint as the garage it replaced.

The functions are banal: a house divided in private area with bedrooms, and social area with living-rooms. The density of the area is high and the width of the street is minimal. To provide its inhabitants with maximal daylight during the day, a so-called ‘canyon’ is introduced. The canyon flows through the house and encloses the stairs. It’s orientated in a way that light falls to the lower floors.

The facade is an echo of the canyon. Where the canyon is projected, Corten steel is used instead of the certified wood that is applied to the rest of the facade.

As a national award-winning firm, Poteet Architects is best known for their sensitive adaptive reuse of existing buildings and a fresh, rigorous approach to modern interior design. This project originated from Poteet Architects’s client’s wish to experiment with shipping containers. She lives in a small warehouse on a former industrial site just south of downtown. The finished project serves as a guesthouse and is fitted with a shower/WC and a custom stainless sink. The large steel and glass lift/slide and end window wall open the interior to the surrounding landscape. The remainder of the interior is used as a garden shed.

The emphasis was on sustainable strategies– first, the recycling of a “one-way” container for a new and permanent use. The planted roof is held off the container top, providing shade and air-flow to reduce heat gain. The interior is insulated with spray foam then lined with bamboo plywood, equally appropriate for the floor as the walls. The grey water from the sink and shower is captured for roof irrigation. The WC is a composting toilet. The rear of the container is screened by wire mesh panels which will eventually be covered in evergreen vines.

This unique studio apartment is a renovation of Plaza-Astoria Cinema in Stockholm. The cinema was designed by Bjorn Hedvall and opened in 1931 but recently it become this luxury 423 square meter living space. The apartment features a 39 square meter terracen and an 22 square meter orangery. The main living area has the ceiling height of 7.8 meters and includes such cool things as a fire ring, a luxury bathroom with adjoining sauna, a Japanese recreational area, a raised sleeping area, a walk-in closet and a 5 meter high palm-tree. The magnificent terrace has sun all day long in the summer.
